Map Size
Fallout 4’s map is going to be one of the largest created in video game history. The map is said to be at least three times as large as the map developed for Skyrim. Players have scrutinized that such a large world will lead to the game being an open world simulator with very little content, but this isn’t what Interplay has in mind.
The map is going to feature all sorts of activities and adventures for players and will be made large in order to fit all the content, rather than just being big for the sake of having a huge map. Players can explore whole ruined cities, other vaults, and much more. The game is going to have several levels to it as places you travel will sometimes have their own stories that will load you into a temporary new map to take on the adventure.
Build Your World
Fallout is taking a different spin in the series with Fallout 4. It’s like Fallout is meeting MineCraft to create a unique world for the player. Players are able to put together bases and buildings that can house all sorts of items that you can craft. Some of these items include a radio, a bed, lighting accessories, and much more. Your base can sometimes be attacked which means players also have to create defensive mechanisms as well. You can set traps and develop turrets that will help guard your base from attacks. You gain materials for your base by exploring the world and finding items such as old tires and wood.
You control your base through the usage of green-screened computer terminals. These terminals can control your traps, lighting, and even the music that’s playing on your radio systems. The colors of your light equipment can be changed as well which was a pretty cool feature. You just hook your objects up to these terminals and gain massive control over their usage. Electricity is a big part of base building and will be used for setting up these systems.
Your weapons and items are also customizable. Guns can get various upgrades such as scopes, magazines, bayonets, silencers, and extended barrels. This will change the stats of the gun making it more powerful and unique by increasing stats such as accuracy or fire rate. There are over 700 modifications for weapons that range anywhere from attaching alarm clocks to beam splitters. These modification objects can be picked up from the environment throughout the game.
Combat System
In Fallout 3 a system was introduced to give more uniqueness and strategy to the combat system. It’s called VATS – Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System – which allowed players to pause the game briefly to target a weak point on an enemy with a chance to hit or miss. This system is going to be continued in Fallout 4 with some improved mechanics to increase the fluidness of the game.
Another cool combat feature is the introduction of new types of power armor. Players can receive unique bonuses depending on the type of armor they wear, such as jetpacks or increased survivability. There are several new models of combat power armor you can obtain by collecting their parts. Players can also combine different pieces from various sets to create a customized version of the armor.
There is also a combat stat system called “S.P.E.C.I.A.L” that allows players to adjust their combat stats. These include strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility, and luck. These will influence your combat mechanics as well as your survivability in the game. Players start with a set amount of attribute points and gain more as they level up.
